1926.650 - Scope, Application, and Definitions

Defines the terms used throughout Subpart P - excavation, trench, sloping, benching, shoring, shielding, Competent Person, and more - and states which operations the standard applies to.

1926.651 - Specific Excavation Requirements

Covers surface encumbrances, underground utility location, access and egress, exposure to vehicular traffic, exposure to falling loads, warning systems for mobile equipment, hazardous atmospheres, protection from water accumulation, stability of adjacent structures, protection of employees from loose rock or soil, inspections, and fall protection for walkways.

1926.652 - Requirements for Protective Systems

Requires a protective system for excavations 5 feet or deeper (unless the excavation is entirely in stable rock or a Competent Person determines no hazard exists), and sets the design criteria for sloping, benching, shoring, and shielding systems, including when a registered professional engineer's design is required.
