They're Not Interchangeable
Soil type, trench depth, available space, and the nature of the work all determine which system (or combination) is appropriate. A Competent Person makes this call using tabulated data for standard conditions, or a registered professional engineer's design for excavations 20 feet or deeper or non-standard conditions.
